Tuition Tuition Tuition

Read this blog from a mother in Penang about tuition. Got me thinking again whether I want to give tuition again this year. You see I've been "jobless" or more accurately without a permanent job for over 2 years. Luckily, recently, I've finally managed to secure a full time job.

I've taken on so many jobs in the past including tuition and the blog about the "evils" of tuition got me thinking again. I gave tuition to students studying programming because the failure rate at a local IT college was so high. The standards (teaching or learning? I don't know) were so bad that I got enough students to sustain me for the 2 years. I pity these students as some of them were 'A' grade material - meaning they could score an A in their subject with little effort. However they still failed once in their finals - I conclude that this was because of lack of proper guidance. Out of 10 students I will always have 1 or 2 such students and it was easy to predict they would score in their final exams.

Needless to say it was a joy and a very easy task to guide this students.

The others who were not "A-grade-material" still had a much better chance of passing after taking tuition.

Anyway, I have decided I would continue giving tuition again just for the satisfaction of seeing my students score higher. My passing rate is 70% whereas the rest of the IT college students passing rate is about 30%. Oh of cause I also do it for the extra cash of course :)
